The community was first settled by Europeans in 1710. At the time, the site was already known for being an important crossing on the Passaic River.
It was also situated on the path of a popular Native American trail.
During the 1770s, the newly-renamed community of Chatham became closely tied to the American Revolutionary War.
In 1897, the community of Chatham borough officially broke off from Chatham Township through an Act of the New Jersey Legislature.
Today, this 2.5-square mile community boasts a central business district, a railroad station and plenty of pedestrian-friendly amenities.
In fact, in July 2005, CNN/Money and Money Magazine ranked Chatham Borough as the ninth best place to live in the United States.
And in 2008, New Jersey Monthly magazine ranked the community as the 25th best place to live in New Jersey.
Residents living in Chatham Borough are served by the School District of the Chathams, which also serves Chatham Township.
The district was formed during the 1986 elections and today includes several award-wining public schools.
