What do the New York Jets, Fairleigh Dickinson University, The College of Saint Elizabeth and BASF, the world’s largest chemical company, have in common? They are all located in Florham Park, a picturesque suburban community located about 30 miles west of Manhattan in southeast Morris County. Bordered by Madison, Chatham, Morris Township, Hanover and East Hanover, its central location is close to a network of local and interstate highways, trains, bus routes and major airports.
With a population of over 12,600 residents, Florham Park’s reputation for excellent public and private schools, low property taxes and a variety of vibrant recreational opportunities make the borough a haven to home seekers looking for an outstanding quality of life. Measuring just under eight square miles, residents appreciate the borough’s friendly small-town atmosphere and suburban conveniences.
When Movoto.com ranked the 10 Best Small Cities in New Jersey in 2014, Florham Park came in at Number One due to its overall safety, median household income, strong housing market and high education of its residents. The ranking considered all 127 municipalities in the state, and Florham Park’s top rating even bested Princeton and several Bergen County towns that were lower on the list.
It was first formed in 1899 using portions of Chatham Township.
As of the 2010 Census, this charming community had a population of about 13,000.
Despite its size, Florham Park is well-known in the Northeast region, especially among football fans. That’s because as of 2008, it’s been the home of the New York Jets training camp.
It’s also the North American headquarters for the BASF corporation, which is the world’s largest chemical company.
The English first settled Florham Park in the late 1600s. When it was incorporated in the 1800s, it got its name from a variety of sources.
“Florham” comes from the fact that Florence Vanderbilt (granddaughter of Cornelius Vanderbilt) built an English-style country mansion on a large plot of land within the settlement and called in Florham in the late 1800s.
The name comes from the combination of her name and that of her husband’s, which was Hamilton.
“Park” was added on to pay homage to another stately home in the area, “Brookdale Park,” which was owned by Dr. Leslie Ward.
Today, Florham Park is known for its world class charm while still maintaining its small town feel.
