Hanover Township Homes for Sale

Located in Morris County, NJ, Hanover Township is a close-knit community of nearly 13,000 residents as of the 2000 Census.

Located within the township are the unincorporated communities of Whippany and Cedar Knolls.

This community was the location of the first settlement in northwest New Jersey.

New Englanders first established the settlement along the Whippany River in 1685, which is close to where the present-day Whippany Cemetery is on Route 10.

The name for the community was derived from the House of Hanover in Germany.

This Morris County township was officially created in 1720, although it wasn’t until 1740 that it was incorporated.

However, since the area that comprised Hanover Township was so big, it was eventually subdivided into smaller municipalities.

The new boundaries for Hannover Township were officially established by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on Feb. 21, 1798.

The community remained a relatively quiet place to live up until after World War II, when suburbanization encouraged population growth in the area.

Today, the 10.7 square mile community boasts plenty of amenities and attractions, including the Whippany Railway Museum and the Morris County Library.
