Madison Borough Homes for Sale

Madison is a beautiful borough in Morris County that had a population of 16,530 as of the 2000 Census.

Referred to as the “Rose City,” this community prospered – at least in part - because of its rose growing industry. Since those days, Madison has developed over the years as a thriving business and cultural center.

Madison also has a strong connection with its history, as evident by the number of historic buildings around the community that still exist, including all of those within the Madison Civic Commercial Historic District.

History of Madison, NJ

Madison officially became an independent borough in 1889 and seceded from Chatham Township.

Around this time (shortly after the Civil War), population growth in Madison really took off.  A local railroad helped fuel this growth.  That’s because the railroad provided a means to transport Madison’s farm produce to neighboring markets.

Today, Madison has a diverse local economy, with many major corporations headquartered there, including Atlantic Mutual Insurance Company, Quest Diagnostics, Wyeth and Maersk Lines.

As for commercial space, vacant buildings are a rare sight in the borough limits.  And Madison’s eclectic and top-notch restaurant scene has been nationally recognized.

This New Jersey is governed by the borough form of government.
